Many real estate agents think about quitting at this time of year. National and local dues need to be paid and they look back over the last year, concentrate on the expenses and lack of (enough) income and then despair begins to set in. But let’s talk about how you got here and the consequences of quitting.
Maybe You Should Quit
The bills are piling up. Heck, last week you had a bill collector call and you promised to pay even though you are still unsure on how exactly that will happen. Christmas pressure is mounting…
I’ve been there.
Yes, I have been there. Real estate markets go up and they go down. And I was an agent that relied on how those markets were performing for the bulk of my real estate business. I hadn’t yet learned to be disciplined in my lead generation, lead follow up and with my time. I hadn’t yet realized that I should NEVER stop prospecting. And I hadn’t gotten a full handle on how to handle my money.
Get A Job
Naturally, thoughts turn to getting a job. But what are you going to do?
What was I qualified to do? Not much. I had dropped out of college my senior year and I had no interest in returning. Six figure jobs weren’t showing up in the newspaper very often and the few resumes I sent out were a lesson in rejection. Worse rejection, actually, than a seller choosing someone else to list his or her house.
Let’s just say I did land one of those jobs that I thought I needed; what would have happened? I would have done for someone else what I wasn’t willing to do for myself all for the safety of a paycheck that I could have been paying myself (although much more) if I had just done for myself what I was now going to do for someone else. Did you follow all of that? Think about it. It’s almost comical, really.
If You Are Going To Quit, Quit Whining
When you’ve reached the point of thinking about quitting your real estate career you are most likely in hard economic times. I’ve seen it over and over and over again in my years. I’ve lived it, too. I know the feelings; fear, doubt, anxiousness and depression.
Go ahead and have your pity party and then pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get started with the new you. Decide this is for you, today and in the future! Quit whining today and start winning.
The phone calls and late notices won’t stop today or even next week. But once you’ve made the decision to succeed you are more than half way there. It’s a new year (next week as I write this) and I want you to succeed. Your local office wants you to succeed. Your friends want you to succeed and your family NEEDS you to succeed. Start today!
It is time to immerse yourself in training, education and work. Nothing to do tomorrow? Get up early anyway and start. Start researching homes, planning classes and meeting people. If you need a pep talk contact me and I’ll be glad to encourage you and coach you through this. I’ve been there. I know what if feels like.
Just know this. I’ve been on the precipice. I have known other agents that have stood on the edge, too. Some have fallen to their professional deaths. Others have backed away, stood tall and bravely re-started their journey to the top of their mountain. You can succeed, too. Come on. Remember all those that are cheering for you. Concentrate on them!
